Important information for schools/settings
Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs does not directly employ Visiting Music Teachers and, as with other visiting staff, it is solely the school’s responsibility to ensure that all appropriate child protection and safeguarding measures have been followed, whether the individual is offering lessons in an employed or self-employed capacity. Please see Devon Education Services’ Safeguarding One Minute Guide on Visiting Music Teachers for further guidance.

Important information for parents/carers
If you are arranging out-of-school instrumental/vocal lessons for your child, we strongly advise you to satisfy yourself that the Visiting Music Teacher you choose has the following important documentation in place:
-
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure
People who work unsupervised with children or vulnerable adults should have an Enhanced Level DBS certificate issued in the last 3 years or be subscribed to the ‘update service’ (in which case you can check their DBS records online using their code number). -
Safeguarding/Child Protection Training
It’s good practice for anyone working with children or vulnerable adults to complete appropriate Safeguarding/Child Protection Training for the work they are carrying out, so ask when they last attended such training, what it covered and how they apply that to their work. -
Public Liability Insurance
Most self-employed Visiting Music Teachers are members of the Musicians Union or Independent Society of Musicians (ISM), which includes Public Liability Insurance cover, as well as generic Privacy, Safeguarding and Health & Safety policies.
We also suggest that you ask about qualifications and recent CPD, as well as experience of working with specific age groups or abilities. Most Visiting Music Teachers will be happy to offer a trial lesson with no obligation.
