South Devon Youth Jazz, in association with the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra and Devon & Torbay Music Education Hubs, are delighted to present this term’s masterclass with Emma Rawicz for young musicians on Thursday 22nd June at King Edward VI Community College, Totnes TQ9 5JX.

Join us from 6-7:30pm for a jazz improvisation masterclass led by multi-award winning saxophonist and ex-DYJO member Emma Rawicz and supported by a professional team of rhythm section and brass tutors – it’s open to any students Grade 2+ who are interested in playing jazz on any instrument. We will have a short performance of the masterclass content for parents at 7:30pm, followed by a short performance from Emma and the tutors.

Emma Rawicz is a multi-award winning young saxophonist and composer, already making waves on the UK music scene and beyond. She has been described as “An astonishing new talent” (Jamie Cullum – BBC Radio 2), ‘a force to be reckoned with’ (Jazzwise) and ‘a fast-rising star’ (London Jazz News). At the age of 21 she has already recorded and released an eagerly awaited debut album ‘Incantation’ featuring Ant Law, made up entirely of her original compositions. Emma’s second album ‘Chroma’ recorded in summer 2022 and features an all-star band of Ivo Neame, Ant Law, Conor Chaplin and Asaf Sirkis and will be released in August 2023.

Emma has already sown many of the important seeds for a major career. Devon born, now London based, she has already led her band for appearances at overseas festivals and has negotiated and managed a major UK tour for her quintet. She regularly plays at major London venues such as Ronnie Scotts and The Jazz Cafe either headlining with her own band or playing as a member of other well known musicians’ bands. Emma is a recipient of the 2021 Drake Yolanda Award and winner of ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, has a Jazz FM award to her name, as well as being a finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician competition.

Growing up in rural North Devon, Emma didn’t discover jazz until the age of 15, and didn’t pick up a tenor saxophone until a year later, but had spent her childhood otherwise immersed in largely folk and classical music.

Emma is a natural performer. Her music has a unique sound, fusing all her many influences, and her compositions range from lilting Afro Cuban inspired grooves to hard hitting modern jazz and funk numbers.
