LISTEN: Presented by BSO Associate Patrick Bailey and seven Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra musicians, the first half of the concert focuses on four set works, each introduced with live analysis followed by a full performance, providing a highly engaging environment for musical analysis. Students will gain deeper insight into key words and compositional approaches, enhancing their understanding and supporting their coursework. This year’s concert will feature:
- J.S. Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor (final movement) BWV 10167 (Eduquas)
- Bartok: Hungarian Pictures (AQA)
- Steve Reich: Clapping Music (AQA further listening)
- Will Goodchild: Surviving Paradise Wildlife Documentary (relevant to all)
COMPOSE: In the second half, students explore composition through a collaborative process, culminating in a brand-new piece composed by Patrick using ideas submitted by participating schools via a composition storyboard. Participating schools will be sent resources to use in their lessons.
PERFORM: This year, we are also offering students the opportunity to join us for the morning, bringing their instruments along to experience the thrill of playing side-by-side with professional musicians as part of a large-scale Come & Play Workshop. Patrick will conduct this eclectic orchestra (with differentiated parts provided for different levels of ability) as they come together for a collaborative performance of Toto’s Africa (Eduquas) and Queen’s Seven Seas of Rhye (AQA). Devon Music Education Hub will have some keyboards and/or basic percussion instruments available for any students that are unable to bring their own instrument. Places for this element of the day are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
